Bamboo House

The transformation of WG's house in the NW of Kyoto, close to the Golden Pavilion, from retro Japan to retro fusion chic! Artisans, inspired ideas and super hard working (handsome) builders all helped me along the way!

A beautiful step to the bathroom made by professional plasterer Miyabe and his team. This was made by hand in an afternoon. There was no plaster in anyone’s hair by the end of the day!

The bathroom door needed finshing, so Kimura dropped by on another trip to Kyoto and sorted the sliding mechanism out.

There’s a small deck out the back of the house next to the bathroom. The bathroom lights are underneath the windowsills so it looks really pretty at night, even in the rain. We finished the outside of the bathroom wall with beige coloured plaster and a strip of bamboo.

The upstairs rooms are usually divided by sliding doors, but here an old screen (byobu) with calligraphic painting fit perfectly in the space.

A view of the kitchen/dining area looking towards the back of the house. We put in an old pair of traditional sliding doors (which were originally front doors) below the ranma (carved piece). They allow you to view the garden from the living room. The bathroom is on the right, with the arched doorway. The kitchen is to the left, next to the white sliding doors.

The living room with the sliding doors in place. The lampshade I made out of paper, wire and glue, and looks like a big jellyfish!
